The Moroccan Association of Teachers of English (MATE) was founded in Rabat in1979.
It held its first annual conference in 1980 and has had an annual conference since. His Majesty King Mohammed VI became patron in 1989 and has organised national and international events.
MATE aims to:

- support contact between teachers in Morocco and teachers of English in other countries
- encourage research in the field of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) in Morocco.
British Council and MATE
The British Council and MATE regularly run teacher training events, workshops, seminars and conferences. Over 1,000 MATE members benefit from British Council teacher training courses each year, which benefits tens of thousands of students.
