Museum and Heritage Management skills development in Morocco: a pilot project

A skills-based training programme for museum and heritage practitioners in Morocco, the project was launched in 2019 as a collaboration between the British Council, the Institut National des Sciences de l'Archéologie et du Patrimoine (INSAP), the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, and the Kingdom of Morocco’s Ministry of Culture and Communication;

The training offers a group of 15-20 current museum and heritage practitioners in Morocco, bespoke museum skills training developed and delivered by the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester and other experts over 5 days.

The programme was build on past scoping studies, and particularly the 2018 British Council/University of Leicester study Museum Sector Skills and Higher Education Partnerships in Morocco.

The 2018 scoping study indicated key areas of need for skills training in the museum and heritage sectors in Morocco. This project aims in part to provide training to help meet some of those needs, and in part to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of the sector and of the best ways to support the development of sustainable, local solutions to addressing them.

The training is delivered each year by up two members of a team from the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. The team have extensive knowledge, understanding and networks within the UK museum sector and deep expertise and experience in designing and delivering museum skills training for UK and non-UK students and professionals. A range of whole- and small-group learning methods are used, alongside practice-based activities. The trainers also use strategies to ensure that they are able to respond to local contexts and priorities identified by the participants and other stakeholders in Morocco.

The training

The proposed content has five core parts.

In each part of the training, trainers and participants scope out the topic together, sharing and examining approaches in Morocco, the UK and elsewhere, before deepening knowledge and understanding through a range of practical and classroom learning activities:

Museums and Heritage Sites in Morocco and Beyond: Purpose, Values and Possibilities
Museum Skills: Collections
Museum and Heritage Skills: Audiences and Communities
Museum and Heritage Skills: Management and Leadership
Museums and Heritage in Morocco: Possibilities and Realities

The 2020 scheduled training was postponed due to the current Covid-19 crisis.
